An assessment is typically required when a development project — such as a subdivision, infrastructure works, renewable energy facility, or site alteration — is subject to approval under the Planning Act, Environmental Assessment Act, Aggregate Resources Act, or other legislation. Municipalities, approval authorities, or the Ministry of Citizenship and Multiculturalism (MCM) may require it if the property shows archaeological potential (e.g., proximity to known sites, historical land use, or areas of Indigenous interest). We can review your project to confirm whether one is needed.
No — many properties clear at Stage 1 (background study) or Stage 2 (field survey) if no resources are identified. Only sites with significant archaeological resources proceed to Stage 3 (evaluation) and Stage 4 (mitigation and excavation). We guide you efficiently through only the stages your project requires.
Timelines vary depending on project size, location, season, and findings. A Stage 1 desktop study can often be completed in 2–4 weeks; Stage 2 fieldwork may add 4–8 weeks depending on weather and site conditions. More complex projects involving Stage 3 or 4 work can take several months. We prioritize clear communication and proactive updates to keep your timeline on track.
As early as possible — ideally during site selection or pre-application. Starting early avoids surprises, potential delays in approvals, or the need for costly redesigns. Many clients begin with a Stage 1 to inform feasibility before committing to a site.
